Monday up at the farm was far too rainy to do any hiking, but I'd already planned ahead for a couple of rainy day activities. I chose to visit the Almanzo Wilder Homestead in Malone. I wanted to see the homestead, now a museum. I got the dogs all situated and drove to Malone where, after a series of turns on rural roads, I found the homestead and museum:
Laura Ingalls Wilder, you may recall, was the author of a series of books which included "Little House On The Prairie." Her husband, Almanzo Wilder, had grown up in Malone, New York and she wrote a book about his childhood entitled "Farmer Boy."
The place looked abandoned as I pulled in, but it was still early and I figured that perhaps they were getting few visitors on a Monday morning:
They'd set up a field of scarecrows and grave markers, so I assumed they were planning a Halloween celebration:
The house looked particularly interesting to me, but first I had to stop at the office and pay admission:
There was a sign on the office front door saying the museum was closed for the season. The door was unlocked, but there was not a soul to be found anywhere. I was sorry to have missed the opportunity, but perhaps I'll get another opportunity in the spring. Their website, if you should be interested, is here:
