Chapter Two, Winthrop, New York

I continued on my driving tour of Winthrop. As I said yesterday, this was one hamlet I wanted to get to know better as it will someday be my mailing address and the place where I shop when I can't or won't make it into the bigger cities. Many homes were burning wood on that very cold day:

I loved the headboards on this old home's front porch and the old, red barn out behind the neighbors' house:

I've seen this sort of house in other places around the area, built of rock-face block with a false front and coated with what appeared to be aluminum roof coating. There surely must have been an explanation, but I never found out what it might be:

A nice porch and a gold star. Was the star part of the leftover Christmas decorations? I suspected not, as it was rather common to see such adornments on the fronts of homes in the area:

Adirondack chairs on a friendly front porch with another red barn just visible in the background:

And this convenience store, the go-to place to meet and greet your neighbors, refill your pick-up truck and enjoy coffee and donuts. And that's not to mention their wonderful ice cream:

The Winthrop Post Office:

And a Health Center:

The local Agway farm and feed store. They used to also pick up and repair my riding lawn mower before their small engine repairman quit. I don't know what I'll do now:

This is what it looks like as one pulls into town. The sign says that Malone is 27 miles straight ahead and Massena is 10 miles to the left. The Goose Landing Restaurant is off to the right on the banks of the St. Regis River:

I turned in to see the Goose Landing Restaurant and the St. Regis River. I ate here one night several years ago and was unimpressed, but it's a great location:

Back in the town center, I passed the Winthrop Furniture company. I'm told that they sell the high end furniture whereas the Wholesale Furniture Company has the lower priced stuff. But there was a lot more to see in Winthrop, so I'll post Chapter Three tomorrow:
