Chapter Four, Winthrop, New York

This was becoming the most extensive driving tour of a local hamlet I'd ever taken. But Winthrop was perfect for such a photo tour - large enough to have lots of interesting places, but small enough to cover a good, representative sample in six posts. This lovely, elaborate home, for instance:

And this old fashioned grocery store, apparently still in business:

Right on the St. Regis River - a home with a miniature lighthouse and a community of trailers out back:

Very large and solidly built:

And a funeral home. I thought their use of a marble headstone as a sign was very clever and tasteful:

A screened-in porch filled with firewood, and wood smoke wafting from the top of the chimney:

A nice home on a corner lot - and more firewood:

An Insurance Agency:

An American Legion:

And a big old former farm house with a nice barn out back:

Lots of chairs on the front porch for sitting and talking to friends and family, a carriage house out back and tall Spruce trees on the side:

I turned onto the road which would take me to nearby Brasher Falls, a road which ran right alongside the St. Regis River. All the houses on one side of the road were, as you can see, on the river. But there's still more to show you of Winthrop, so I'll post Chapter Five tomorrow:
