Beautiful, Rural Stockholm New York

Once I had the apartment emptied and cleaned, the tractor and dresser purchased and everything moved into the farm house - I was exhausted. But I had to drive into Massena to buy some things at Wal-Mart. So I got the dogs situated and took off, detouring toward the northwest to take a closer look at a tiny village which had captivated me the previous day on my way to buy the dresser. As I drove, I entered the town of Stockholm, New York and started taking photos. I began with this magnificent stone house:

I suspected that this was an old farm house, now just someone's home and decorated for Christmas:

There were many magnificent and historic barns in Stockholm:

This brick home appeared to have been connected to a wooden barn at one time. Was it still a barn or had it been converted to living space? By the lack of windows and that big wooden door, I guessed that it was still a barn:

Another small farm with a more modern barn:

Another old barn, sagging under the weight of its many years. This one had a giant Christmas wreath on its door:

A more modern house with an old fashioned fence:

I turned onto a small county road which paralleled the West Branch of the St. Regis River:

And I began seeing houses built of what must have been Potsdam Red Sandstone. There were several of them, all fairly close together:

And a maple sap operation all set up and ready for the early spring runs. It was sure nice to be thinking of spring already:

Another lovely old barn and a wooden fence:

A friendly looking home with split rail fence and pine trees. But my real destination was the hamlet of West Stockholm, just down the road and part of the town of Stockholm. But I'll post about that tomorrow:
