We were on our way back from another weekend at the farm, the dogs and I, and I decided to stop at the Hays Brook Horse Trail for a rest stop:
This is a broad, level trail through the forest which is seldom used and we've always had it all to ourselves. What more could I ask?:
The younger dogs ran ahead, sniffing everything and peeing everywhere. They were sure happy. See all those bushes on both sides of the trail? They were Lowbush Blueberries:
I couldn't go to fast, though, because old Wally and Winky were so very slow. I kept telling the youngsters to slow down and wait for the oldsters to catch up:
Once Wally and Winky had caught up with us, we'd start walking again and exploring the forest:
Little Clover, the adventurer, posed atop an old log amid the Reindeer Lichens, mosses and mushrooms:
I walked off the trail checking all the Lowbush Blueberries for berries but came up empty. Wally went trotting by on the trail while I was in the woods. I don't think he even knew where I was. It's becoming increasingly important that I keep a watch on my two old timers lest they get lost:
Get lost? Who, me? Where am I?:
We returned to the car and then waited for Wally and Winky to catch up to us. Yes, that black dot way back on the trail is Winky taking his sweet time:
Daphne, Seamus, Fergus and Clover jumped up into the car while we waited for the oldsters:
I finally got Wally into the car but still had to wait for Winky. He was waddling casually, stopping to sniff here and there, stopping to lift his leg now and then. He was in no hurry: I suspected that he often forgot he was with us and was just exploring the forest:
But I eventually got all six dogs back into the car and pulled out past the horse hitching post and began driving the access road back to the highway. We had many miles yet to go on our long journey back to Albany:
