Chapter 3: Brushton, New York

I'd just entered the business district of Brushton (see previous two posts), which was surprising in itself as most of these small hamlets don't even have a business district, much less one which is still thriving. And Brushton is only 11 miles from the much larger town of Malone, so people could and probably do shop there:

Brushton had a bank and various stores:

And then I saw this lovely waterfall, apparently a dammed stream:

Across the road from the waterfall was this sign and Spring Grove Road. I took a ride down Spring Grove Road to look, but it ended in the forest with no springs anywhere. I then concluded that the springs must have been related to the waterfall across the street:

I continued my driving tour, passing this very large old home and matching barn:

Another very large home with attached garage:

Friendly, small town elegance:

And yet another white church with steeple:

A very practical home, all prepared for the rigors of either summer or winter:

Flags, front porches, big trees and steel roofs were the order of the day:

I don't know my architecture, but this lovely old home and carriage house looked Victorian to me:

Brushton was, I was finding, one of the most pleasant and prosperous villages I'd seen yet. But I continued my driving tour and will post more tomorrow:
