Beechertown, New York

The next stop on my driving tour was tiny Beechertown, a settlement at the very rural intersections of Elliot Road, Nichols Road, Converse Road and Sullivan Road. I began with this small home:

Followed by this rather large farm:

Another view of that same barn:

A friendly home with lots of windows and a picket fence:

A large, modern home set way back off the road:

And an old barn from a bygone era, slowly rotting into the ground:

I was surprised to learn that I was driving through Fort Jackson State Forest:

These two dogs watched, but didn't bark as I stopped to take a picture. Luckily, my dogs didn't bark either or I'd have had to drive away quickly:

A horse barn:

A home with a collection of canoes and a livestock trailer:

this beautiful farm with its cluster of small buildings was one of my favorites:

And a rather prim and proper farm, all fixed up, squared up and neatly organized. I wondered if there might be an Amish family living there. But I'd come to the end of Beechertown and decided to head for home. I'll post about that tomorrow:

Buckton, New York

I'd intended to drive from Kellogg, New York (see last two posts) to Beechertown, but on the way I found myself in Buckton, a place I'd been previously but had forgotten about. So I grabbed a camera and started snapping photos:

There was an old home or school house:

A small shed standing all alone:

An active Methodist church with a pastor and weekly services:

And a Buckton Town Hall. Even though Buckton is not officially a town (it's in the town of Stockholm), I suppose this serves as a sort of community center:

A larger home with a big star on the garage. Surprisingly, I have seen many such stars on homes but don't know if there's any significance to them or they're just decoration:

A rather large, modern home:

And an active firewood cutting operation:

Another old barn:

I turned down Haack Road, where several years ago I'd visited a small herd of Irish Dexter cattle. There were cattle (not Dexters) congregating at a salt lick next to the road. I rolled the window down to snap their picture and the Papillons were fascinated. The cattle, however, didn't even bother to look our way:

Another nice home with a tall chimney:

And an old building whose purpose I could only guess. That emblem at the top looks vaguely like the Grange emblem. Perhaps it was once a Grange Hall. But I was on my way to discover Beechertown, the next settlement on my list. I'll post about that tomorrow:
